Before you connect
- Your Instagram account must be Business or Creator. In Instagram: Settings, then Account type and tools, then switch to a professional account. It is free.
- You will log in with Instagram. Sygil never sees your password.
Connect
- 1
Open Manage Auto DMs
In your dashboard.
- 2
Click Connect Instagram
You are redirected to Instagram. It shows the permissions Sygil requests.
- 3
Approve
Instagram sends you back to Sygil. You will see "Instagram connected! Create your first automation."
- 4
Turn on message access
In Instagram: Settings, Messages and story replies, Message controls, Connected tools, and turn on Allow access to messages. Without this, Instagram blocks the DMs.
What Sygil can access
Your profile and posts (so you can pick which ones to automate), comments and messages that might trigger an automation, and whether a person follows you if you use "Ask to follow first". It is explained in full in the Privacy Policy.
The account menu
Once connected, your handle appears in the top-right with a status dot.
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Green: Connected and working | All good. |
| Amber: Connection needs attention | Instagram signed Sygil out or could not be reached. Click Reconnect. |
The menu also lets you View profile, Reconnect or Disconnect.
Disconnect
Choose Disconnect and confirm. Your access token and account details are deleted immediately. Your automations are saved, so they are ready again when you reconnect. You can also remove Sygil from Instagram's own settings. See Data deletion.
Common questions
Can I connect more than one Instagram account?
A Sygil page connects to one Instagram account. Connect the account you post your Reels on.
Does connecting change my Instagram account?
No. Sygil reads comments, messages and posts you allow and replies when your automations run. You can disconnect or remove Sygil from Instagram's settings at any time.
I switched to Business but Connect fails.
Wait a few minutes, log out and back in on Instagram, and try again. If it still fails, contact support with a screenshot of the error.
Do I need a Facebook Page?
No. Sygil uses Instagram Login, which does not require a linked Facebook Page.
